When it came to which boilers to choose, being locally manufactured and able to deliver energy efficient heating sealed the deal for Hull Maritime Museum.
Opened in 1871 as Hull’s Dock Offices, this Grade 2* listed building became Hull Maritime Museum in 1975, highlighting Hull’s role as a modern maritime city, and exploring the history of merchant shipping, fishing and whaling in the region. As part of an ambitious restoration project that began in 2020, the museum will have a new atrium and a significant number of artefact storage spaces will be converted into public galleries.
Imax Xtra 2 energy efficient heating
The museum had been heated by a 30 year old cast iron section boiler. The boiler had not only outlived its natural working lifespan, but was also energy inefficient. With building services being replaced and updated throughout the museum as part of the restoration project, the old boiler has now been replaced by two Imax Xtra 2 240kW boilers installed in cascade on a prefabricated header kit. Making an even more energy efficient solution as they have a higher modulation ratio than a single larger boiler, so there is less need for each individual boiler to cycle on and off to meet changing demands for heating over a day.
Hull Maritime Museum is expected to reopen in late 2026.
