Founded in 1921, and situated on a private peninsula at the entrance to Chichester Harbour, which enjoys some of Britain’s best sailing waters, Hayling Island Sailing Club has the rare privilege of being one of only four Royal Yachting Association coastal Centres of Excellence and is one of the leading sailing clubs in the UK.
The clubhouse is well used by members and visitors, especially during regattas when the shower rooms are particularly in demand. The existing boilers used for hot water and underfloor heating in the main clubhouse shower rooms were coming to the end of their working lives and the decision was made to replace them with modern, more energy efficient condensing boilers.
Local company – based in Fareham, Hampshire - J&B Hopkins was engaged by the club to upgrade the heating system. Incorporated in 1978, J&B Hopkins has grown to become a leading southern based building service company, providing a full MEP design and build service, working across most sectors within the construction industry.
A long-standing Ideal Heating Commercial customer, J&B Hopkins selected three Evomax 2 120kW condensing boilers operating in cascade for the clubhouse, providing 360kW output in total. The boilers have been mounted on an Ideal Heating low height frame and header kit, with preformed insulation kits and plate heat exchangers (PHEX) to provide complete separation between the primary and secondary circuits.

In addition to the boilers, J&B Hopkins replaced the flue and upgraded the water system.
Evomax 2: the engineer’s friend
Commenting on the decision to use Evomax 2 boilers for this project, Tony Stockton, Mechanical Project Manager (Technical Services) at J&B Hopkins said: “We have been using Ideal Heating Commercial boilers for over ten years and like their reliability; they are very robust. We fit between 60-100 Evomax 2 boilers a year, virtually always using the frame and header kits. They are so easy to work on – they are not overly complicated to get up and running – that we could literally do them blindfolded, although obviously we don’t! They really are very engineer friendly.”
This combination of reliability and ease of installation, as well as energy efficiency, is what has made the Evomax 2 the UK’s number 1 selling wall mounted commercial boiler, proven in thousands of applications across the UK. Highly efficient, it has up to 99.6% full load efficiency and up to 110% part load efficiency, can operate at up to 30° Δ T, and has a high turndown of 5:1.
The case for cascade
Tony and the technical services team frequently install boilers in cascade, as has been done at Hayling Island Sailing Club: “I like to cascade the boilers as they offer good resilience. This is particularly important for this installation as the hot water demands are horrendous in that there is infrequent demand for a large part of the year but then during regattas there could be 500 showers in two hours!”
Ideal Heating at the ready
Tony also has praise for the support and service provided by Ideal Heating Commercial: “The boilers are very straightforward so we don’t require a lot of support, but if we need it, we always get it. Another important aspect for us is product availability and with Ideal Heating parts are readily available, so there’s no delay.”
The sailing club has around 3,000 members and a permanent staff of more than 20. The club has played a leading role in British sailing, encouraging innovation and development, and nurturing sailing champions including five Olympic medallists.
